Breaking Tor seems to everyone’s favourite hack this weekend as it comes less than 24 hours after the Tor Project developers accused the Federal Bureau of Investigation of paying Carnegie Mellon University $1 million to attack Tor. Zerodium is a security research company which pays high cash rewards to hackers and security researchers who find zero-day exploits. It makes money by paying hackers for exploits and then selling these very exploits to governments around the world, corporations in the defense, technology firms, and finance industries....

Bradford Tousley, an executive of DARPA’s Tactical Technology Office, provided an update on ALASA at 18th Annual Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)’s Commercial Space Transportation Conference in Washington, D.C. Tousley discussed several pivotal accomplishments and challenges which the company had to face to make the module up to date, including its Phase 1 design, preference for Boeing as primary executive for Phase 2 of a program, that includes conducting 12 orbital exam launches of an integrated antecedent system....

Security researchers from Senrio had earlier discovered this high-risk vulnerability in D-Link DCS-930L, a Wi-Fi enabled camera that can be controlled remotely through a smartphone app. In June, Senrio briefly described the issue on their company blog in which they demonstrated their PoC by using their custom tools to take over the Wi-Fi enabled camera. “The vulnerability allows code injection which lets the attacker set a custom password, granting remote access to the camera feed....

Following the similar lines, an 18-year old teenager from India who was addicted over the popular multiplayer online battle royale game, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), committed suicide after his parents refused to buy him a new, high-end smartphone to play the game. According to police, the teenager who lived in Kurla’s Nehru Nagar area of Mumbai, India, demanded that his parents buy him a smartphone costing Rs. 37,000 to play the PUBG mobile game....

University of Missouri-Columbia study whose results are published here, states that Facebook can make us sadder, but only if you’re using it to lurk from afar. Lurking from afar means using Facebook to check on how your old acquaintance/friend/ex-girl friend/boy friend is doing, which actually engaging with them through ‘likes’ comments or sharing their posts. The study by the two researchers Margaret Duffy and Edson Tandoc, has taken care to distinguish between the good kind and the bad kind of Facebook usage....

A Houston area man who is also a ex-military man spoke to Click 2 Houston about his involvement with the global hacktivist group Anonymous and why he severed all ties with the elusive organization. Mike Jones claims he is one of the original members of Anonymous and has been at the forefront of several cyber attacks on government institutions, large corporations and terrorist groups. “We were looking for new ways, new ways of thinking,” Jones said....

The infected apps hide and promote themselves aggressively on Facebook showing continuous advertisements to victims in a variety of ways. When this malware is installed on the victim’s device, they run malicious services automatically upon installation even without needing any user interaction to open the apps. Earlier Facebook reminded you to call your mother, now the social networking behemoth is trying something different this Mother’s Day. It will be adding a new flower reaction to the already existing six reactions that it had enabled in Feb, 2016. LSC comes preloaded on nearly all Lenovo business and consumer desktops and laptop PCs. The software acts as a dashboard monitoring system health and security from battery life, driver updates and firewall status. A fix for the vulnerability was released by Lenovo and can be downloaded by visiting the software’s page on their website. This is the second time the computer maker has had to patch LSC – the first being December 2015....

Over the years, fingerprints and retina scans have been found to be easily hackable but researchers say it is impossible to fake or recreate an user’s internal ear canal which the basic requirement of ear-based login. The ear-based login system has been developed by researchers from NEC and it works by sending sound into someone’s ear and then measuring the echoes they receive. The echo is based on sound reflected from someone’s external ear canal, the tympanic membrane, and by sound that goes beyond the tympanic membrane and is reflected within the inner parts of the ear....

The end of support means the company would now no longer be offering public security updates or fixes, software updates or technical support for Windows 7. However, businesses that haven’t migrated to Windows 10 in time can pay for Extended Security Updates (ESU). According to a local German newspaper, Handelsblatt, the German government which still has more than 33,000 computers running on Windows 7 has decided to pay €800,000 ($887,000) to Microsoft this year for ESU in order to keep their PCs updated and patched....
